Adding a UniFi Floodlight to Your Setup: Unboxing, Installation & Review

If you’re looking to enhance the security of your property with a smart floodlight, the UniFi Floodlight might be the perfect solution. This PoE-powered, motion-sensing floodlight integrates seamlessly with the UniFi ecosystem, offering remote control, brightness adjustments, and scheduling—all without the need for an electrician.

In this post, we’ll go through the unboxing, installation, and features of the UniFi Floodlight, as well as some key reasons why it’s a great addition to any UniFi setup.

Why Choose the UniFi Floodlight?

Traditional floodlights often require hiring an electrician, dealing with electrical codes, and running additional wiring. The UniFi Floodlight eliminates all of that by using Power over Ethernet (PoE), meaning all it needs is a single Cat6 cable with PoE+ support.

Key Features:

PoE-powered – No need for an electrical outlet or wiring.
Motion detection – Automatically turns on when motion is detected.
Brightness control – Adjust the intensity to your preference.
Scheduling & automation – Set it to turn on at dusk or based on activity.
UniFi integration – Easily connects with UniFi Protect for remote control.
Multiple mounting options – Comes with both angled and flush mounts.

For this setup, we’re installing the UniFi Floodlight at Bethlehem Baptist Church to replace broken floodlights. Now, let’s dive into the unboxing and installation process.

Unboxing the UniFi Floodlight

Inside the box, you’ll find:
📦 The UniFi Floodlight unit
📦 An angled mount for downward-facing installation
📦 A flush mount for straight-on placement
📦 Mounting screws and a security screw for added stability

The unit itself is compact but powerful, roughly the size of an iPhone 14. The ethernet port and reset button are on the back, making installation simple.

Installing the UniFi Floodlight

Installation is straightforward and doesn’t require an electrician. Here’s how you do it:

Step 1: Connect the Floodlight to PoE

  • Use a Cat6 cable (PoE+ supported) and plug it into the floodlight.

  • Connect the other end to a PoE switch that supports UniFi Access.

Step 2: Mount the Floodlight

  • Choose between an angled mount (for downward lighting) or a flush mount (for straight lighting).

  • Secure the mount to the wall using the included screws.

  • Attach the floodlight and secure it with the locking screw.

Step 3: Add It to the UniFi Protect App

  • Log into your UniFi Protect dashboard.

  • The system will automatically detect the new device.

  • Click "Add", and the floodlight is ready to go!

Testing the UniFi Floodlight

Once installed, the floodlight offers various settings and controls within the UniFi Protect app:

🔦 Brightness Control: Adjust from low to max brightness. Even at the lowest setting, it provides strong illumination.

🎥 Camera Pairing: Link the floodlight to a UniFi security camera, so it activates when motion is detected.

Motion Detection & Timing:

  • Configure sensitivity levels to avoid false triggers.

  • Set auto shut-off times from 15 seconds to 15 minutes.

☀️ Light Sensor & Scheduling:

  • The built-in light sensor can turn the floodlight on at dusk.

  • Or, set it to motion-only activation for added energy savings.

Different Light Covers & Their Effects

The floodlight comes with different cover options to customize the lighting effect:

1️⃣ Default Cover – A bright, full-spread light.
2️⃣ Opaque Cover – Softens the light for a more diffused glow.
3️⃣ Shielded Cover – Focuses the light beam for a more direct spotlight effect.

After testing, the opaque cover provides a mellow and balanced light, making it a solid choice for most installations.

Final Thoughts: Is the UniFi Floodlight Worth It?

At $99, the UniFi Floodlight is an excellent investment for anyone using the UniFi ecosystem. It eliminates the hassle of electrical wiring, offers remote control, and integrates seamlessly with UniFi security systems.

Pros:

No electrician needed – Just plug in a PoE cable.
Full remote control via UniFi Protect.
Bright and adjustable lighting.
Affordable compared to wired alternatives.

Cons:

Requires a UniFi system (not standalone).
Not a gigabit connection (limited to 100 Mbps, but sufficient for its purpose).

For churches, businesses, and home security, this floodlight is a great alternative to traditional outdoor lighting.
